Comprehensive Personal Finance Tutorials at PersonalFinance.BYU.edu

March 31st, 2008

Several years ago, I said that I wanted to write a book about personal finance. That idea never really got off the ground, but my vision was to develop a resource that would have individual chapters that would build on each other so a person could go from money dummy to financially savvy. Great vision, but I never did it.

Well, it looks like a professor out at BYU has done what I had envisioned, and best of all he has made all of his materials available for free. Dr. Bryan Sudweeks, CFA, is a professor of finance at BYU who has developed an online course in personal finance aimed at people of different experience and education levels, which can be found at personalfinance.byu.edu. The lessons are very logically laid out and are easy to follow. There is online text, PowerPoint presentations, and even PDF copies of the lessons in book form if you want to download everything at once. Best of all, it is free of charge and free of bias that you often see at other personal finance tutorial sites.

It is worth noting that BYU is a university sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which means that the material is written from a Mormon perspective and Mormons are the primary target audience. However, the material is based on sound financial principles, and readers of any religion could learn a great deal from the materials.

I am certainly very impressed with the material, so much so that I am adding a link to the site in the sidebar under Cool Sites. As I read through the lessons I will also likely share insights I have gained to highlight the great work that has been done with this.

I found out about the site from an article in LDS Church News. For a great discussion of the site, see the article here.

The Never-Ending Saga of FreeNEzy.com – A New Owner???

March 29th, 2008

4/22/08 Update:  The FreeNEzy.com website written about in this post appears to have been sold and under new management, as documented on this recent post. While this change in ownership does not change any of the events that have occurred previously with this site (and my friend never got his reward), there is currently no evidence we are aware of that the new owner has continued any of the fraudulent practices previously associated with the site. As always, use caution when dealing with this or any other site.

Long-time readers of this blog are familiar with the exploits of Mr. Vikram Jhaveri, founder of FreeNEzy.com. The whole thing started when Mr. Jhaveri decided to promote his site on the forums over at SlickDeals.net posing as an unaffiliated user. There is some question as to whether the site was actually ever legit or was a scam from the beginning, but after the posting of SlickDeals scores of users flooded the site, many of whom never received the items they had rightfully earned. A very close associate of the blog was one of those folks, which led me to post the story of the scam on this post in April 2007.

The posting went relatively unnoticed until September 2007 when someone purporting to be Mr. Jhaveri starting leaving comments on the original posting trying to justify himself. I posted a reply in the comments of that post which led to another reply, at which point I posted the string as a new post and left a challenge to Mr. Jhaveri to make my friend who is still waiting on his item whole by sending the item. The thought was that Mr. Jhaveri should have had all the information on past users of his site and know who he sent items to, so to fulfill the challenge he would have to make all the users whole since I did not divulge the user’s identity. Of course, still no item and no further reply.

I heard nothing else for about a month, when Mr. Jhaveri found my eBay username off a prior post and started sending me messages through eBay to lead me to believe he was offering other eBay users I had dealt with money for my identity and contact information, which I wrote about here. He pulled this stunt in early October, and then did a similar stunt in November.

Shortly afterwards he decided to list the site for sale on eBay, as posted about here. The asking price for the site at the time was $50,000. The listing I posted resulted in no sale, nor did a relist.

Well, this past week someone using the name Josh has started posting in the comments of the original posts both here and on the old Wordpress site the following:

I bought this website not long ago (freenezy). I definitely didn’t pay 50k for it. I paid much, much less. I wish I knew that it/it’s owner had this reputation before I bought it though, or I wouldn’t have bought it, obviously. Unfortunately, I didn’t come across this until now though, and it’s too late.

Anyway, it looks like I have a lot of work to do to rebuild the reputation of this site, and I intend to do just that. So for starters:

To the person who wrote this article, if you’d like to email me, I’ll gladly give you my phone number. You can then call me to confirm that I am not the previous owner, and that I have every intention to reward members when they complete the necessary requirements. I’ll even email you a scan of my driver’s license if that’s what it takes for you to believe that I am who I say I am.

An interesting development indeed, however I’ll be honest that I don’t completely trust it. Why? Several reasons:

  1. The FreeNEzy site looks exactly the same now as it did before. The page is still noted as being run by eJawab, Inc., which was/is Mr. Jhaveri’s company. The site also still notes that it is a California based student run organization and lists a PO Box in Chico, California as the mailing address for the site (Mr. Jhaveri was/is a student at a university in Chico).
  2. This person is inviting me to email him for proof of his identity. Considering that Mr. Jhaveri has tried in the past to learn my identity and contact information, this could very well just be a scheme on his part to get that info. Sorry, not gonna do it!
  3. Who in their right mind would buy a web site without even doing a Google search on the site’s name? My posts about this site are at the top of the second page of results for the term “freenezy.com”.

Here is what will convince me that the site was indeed sold:

  1. A scan of a signed document evidencing sale of the site from Mr. Jhaveri to a new owner.
  2. A copy of a canceled check or other proof of payment from the new owner to Mr. Jhaveri for the amount specified in the sales document.
  3. A scan of the ID of the new owner with the name matching that in the sales document.
  4. As new owner, what message you would like to give to those who are aware and may have been victims of the scams perpetrated through the FreeNEzy.com website.

If you have these things, you can reply back with a comment to this post. I have placed your IP and the name “Josh” on my list to hold for moderation, so any reply back would have to be approved by me to be visible on this site (Note: I did not do that on the old Wordpress site, so don’t post it over there). Place the document copies on the site of your choice and provide the link in your comment. You may black out ID numbers, account numbers, etc., but there must be enough information for me to have a reasonable certainty that you are who you claim to be. I reserve the right to post any documents provided as evidenced, however I will remove the names of individuals, account numbers, contact information, pictures, and the sales price before posting.

I will review any documents provided, and if your story checks out I will make a new posting stating that it is my opinion based on the documents provided that the site was in fact sold and that Mr. Jhaveri is no longer associated with the site. Additionally, I will post the message provided (within reason) in that post and provide a note on each of the prior posts where FreeNEzy.com is mentioned that the site was sold with a link to the new posting. I will not delete the prior posts because these are things that actually happened and there are lessons to be learned from those posts to protect oneself from other scams that may be out there, however each of those pages will have an explanatory note that the site discussed is under new ownership.

Happy Day! My Lawn Guys Came Back!

March 21st, 2008

Put this one in the category of good luck. It is March again, and here in Texas that means the grass (and weeds) are growing again. Since we moved into our house in 2005, we have always used the same lawn service which charged us the dirt cheap rate of $20 to cut, edge, and weed-eat out yard. Because of this dirt cheap rate and the fact this is our first home, we do not own any lawn equipment except a few shovels and other assorted garden tools.

Unfortunately we lost the lawn service’s phone number (most of these outfits, including this one, aren’t listed in the phone book or anything like that) and had to start seeking out another service. The first one we called gave us a quick estimate of $35, and missed the appointment to come out and verify the estimate and do the initial mow. The second one we called couldn’t make it out here when we were here, but did drive by and give us an estimate of $25.

We had scheduled the second one to come out and do the work tomorrow, but lucky for us our old guys showed up this morning asking if we still wanted to use them. As they are still charging us the $20 rate, we said heck yeah, and they are working out in the lawn as I write this post. They have always done a great job for us at a great rate and show up like clockwork on Friday mornings to do the work, so we are extremely happy they came back.

So what is the lesson from this whole thing? I guess the obvious is to make sure you keep the numbers for service providers you really like in a safe place. Sadly it is so hard to find quality dependable service, so once you do find someone you like don’t lose them just because you didn’t bother to keep up with the number.

Rant: Politicians, Taxes, and Gas Prices

March 20th, 2008

Sorry, but this news story just set me off this morning. Rep. John Dingell of Michigan is proposing a 50 cent tax on every gallon of gas sold to discourage consumption with the idea that it will help cut greenhouse gas emissions. What a friggin’ moron!

If the run-up in the price of gasoline has taught us anything it is that the demand for gasoline is pretty static. As prices increase motorist may be more conscious of their driving habits and work harder to consolidate errands into a single trip to slightly reduce consumption, but the bulk of our driving is not discretionary. We must go to work. We must make at least the occasional trip out for groceries, household items, etc. We have to bring the kids to day care. Except for those few who live in a dense urban environment, the automobile is a fact of life. Yes, there is public transit in many areas, but in many areas this just isn’t practical (or safe). Imagine trying to lug an entire cart full of groceries onto the bus for the ride home! We have seen in the last year that although gas prices have skyrocketed consumption has largely stayed the same. Another 50 cent hike per gallon isn’t going to keep Americans off the road and from living their daily lives.

Of course this is from a member of the same party that always cries the loudest when gas prices do go up and likes to threaten the big oil companies with new taxes. If this new tax were enacted the heat would likely be on the oil companies for the increase and not the politicians since most Americans are too politically disinterested to know of all the taxes on gasoline that are already collected, which is typically around 40 cents a gallon.

As a former employee of the refining company of a large oil company, I can tell you that refining company profits aren’t really that impressive. Refining and marketing is considered a necessary evil. Although refining companies are doing reasonably well now, it wasn’t that long ago that many were losing money. Where was the outcry for the refining companies when gas was under $1 a gallon? In the company I worked for, the message was always that our exploration and production arm made a great profit and the expectation for us in refining and marketing was not to lose too much of those profits.

Even to say that the large western oil companies are to blame for the increase in crude oil prices and thus the increase in gas prices is ridiculous. Reserves controlled by the likes of BP, ExxonMobil, and Shell are dwarfed by the vast reserves controlled by companies controlled by governments in Venezuela, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere. Everyone else, including the major western oil companies, are largely at the mercy of these state-owned companies when it comes to the market prices of crude oil.

I’m not going to argue the oil companies are without sin, but they aren’t the source of all evil either.  I just get angry when these stupid politicians start spouting off about the economics of crude oil and gas prices without even an elementary understanding of what they are talking about.

New ING $25 Bonus Referral Links Posted

March 18th, 2008

I posted a new batch of referral links for ING today. By following these links, a new customer can earn a $25 bonus for opening either an Orange Savings or Electic Orange Checking account with an opening deposit of $250 or more. That’s an instant 10% return!

This month’s referral links are brought to you by my beautiful baby girl, who we have dubbed “Happy Sunshine Angel Baby”. Each time someone uses one of these links to open an account at ING as a new customer with at least $250, ING will deposit a $10 bonus to her account. Here is a little message from her, translated from baby talk of course:

Happy Sunshine Angel Baby

Hi! I’m the one they call Happy Sunshine Angel Baby! That isn’t my real name (we aren’t hippies are anything like that), but my daddy says there are too many crazy people out there to be giving out my real name. I am now almost 5 months old and I want to be a financial power when I grow up, or at least have enough money to buy a pony. Daddy started my savings account with money I got from my great-grandmother and great aunts, and Daddy kicked in some more since I’m so cute, but I want more! So open an account with my links this month so I can get my pony!

Free Blind After Rebate at JustBlinds.com (ends 3/18/2008)

March 17th, 2008

Here is a pretty sweet deal. Right now at JustBlinds.com, new customers can get a free blind (up to $50) by mail-in rebate. You just have to place an order by tomorrow (3/18/2008) and use the promotion code GET1FREE at checkout. Then just complete the rebate form and send in the required support to get your rebate. The only thing you have to pay for is the order processing fee of $4 and sales tax if you live in Texas.

We actually did this deal last year at Blinds.com when they ran the same promotion and we were very satisfied with the quality of the blinds and had no problems getting the rebate. It seems that JustBlinds.com and Blinds.com are affiliated somehow as the rebate forms are almost identical, but it has been verified that these are separate entities and you can do this deal even if you did the Blinds.com deal last year.

Here is the discussion of the deal over at SlickDeals for anyone who wants more information.

Just a little something to tide everyone over until I have time to post something more substantial…

Cheap Bastard Thinking in Action!

March 9th, 2008

I just wanted to share the highlights of my weekend to illustrate (a) just how cheap of a bastard I am, and (b) how the cheap bastard mode of thinking can help enrich your life.

Friday night, we loaded up the kids and took a trip to Sears. We had read on SlickDeals that Sears was having a huge clearance sale on clothing, and since we needed clothes for the twins we decided to check it out. When we got there we found several racks of clearance baby clothes that were half off the marked clearance price, which in many cases was already 50-75% off the original price. We ended up with two large bags full of baby clothes for just over $100, some items as low of $0.39 each. How did we pay? With a $100 Lands End gift card (Sears accepts Lands End gift cards because they own Lands End and sell their clothing in Sears locations) that we got by redeeming 9,000 of the 15,000 bonus Thank You points for applying for the Citi Professional card. Not too shabby!

Saturday afternoon we took a trip to Home Depot to get a couple of things for a project here at the house and decided to get the grill I’ve been wanting for the last two years. I decided on the Weber Spirit E-310 LP gas grill, which was $399.00. We bought that along with a propane tank and the supplies for our other project, and used the 10% off Lowes Moving coupon to take off a total of about $45 off our purchase. We paid with a $500 gift card that we got as a promotional bonus for opening an AMEX Business Gold card on which the annual fee was waived for the first year.

So you can see this weekend we got about $300 worth of clothing for our kids and a new $400 grill for daddy, all for nothing but our time in applying for a couple of credit cards and fulfilling the simple terms of two promotional offers. And this doesn’t include the $50 or so we still have on that Home Depot gift card and the $60 Target card from the other part of the Citi promotion. And don’t forget about the 30+ boxes of cereal I have stacked in my pantry now from the Safeway cereal sale.

So who says the frugal cheap bastard lifestyle isn’t worthwhile?

Cheap/Free Cereal at Safeway & Walgreens

March 5th, 2008

I love cereal. Like most kids, the cereal aisle was my favorite aisle of the grocery store growing up. I could eat cereal for any meal of the day, or as a snack. I just love the stuff.

Anyway, this is a good week to stock up on cereal, thanks to some real good specials and online printable coupons. The best deal is at Safeway stores (also known as Tom Thumb, Randalls, and about twenty other names depending on what part of the country you are in), ending Tuesday 3/11/2008. Safeway has a special where you get $10 off when you buy 5 General Mills or Quaker cereals. Several of the cereals are on sale 5 for $15, so after the extra $10 off they come out to $1 each. To sweeten the deal, there are printable coupons out there for many of these cereals. Depending on whether your area doubles coupons and up to what amounts, these could result in free cereal or even getting paid to take the cereal. Here’s a list of the cereal items known to be included:

UPDATE: Per the folks at SD, Honey Bunches of Oats is also on sale at Safeway for $2 a box, so you may be able to get all of your cheap cereal in one stop! There is also a deal at Walgreens this week that is very YMMV. Walgreens has Post cereals including Honey Bunches of Oats on sale this week for $1.99. There are printable coupons for $2 off the Chocolate variety, however very few people have reported finding that variety. However, many have been able to get their locations to take the Chocolate coupon for other varieties, but they would be well within their rights to refuse you for anything but the Chocolate variety. Here are the links to the printable Honey Bunches of Oats coupons:

Link 3

A few helpful hints on all of these coupons:

  • Don’t copy the coupons that you print. Each has a unique barcode, and the store won’t get reimbursed for the copied coupons. Using copied coupons is fraud. Don’t be that guy!
  • The program that prints the coupons limits you to two printings per coupon (each will have a unique code). To access the second coupon, use your back button to go back to the first page titled “Coupon Print”.
  • Coupons don’t have to be printed in color.
