Thoughts on blogging for dollars…

September 17th, 2009

Being a blog that focuses on personal finance, we talk a lot about money here. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that this blogger wants to make some money off of this blog. I’ve tried a few things before with very limited success (I’ve probably made enough to cover the costs of maintaining the site). Which leads to the obvious question: “Why?” Low traffic levels and poor ad placement probably have a bit to do with the limited success. The lack of selling of services and products as part of my content is probably another cause.

After thinking of what I’m doing wrong, I started thinking about the one thing that has been moderately successful: ING referral links. What makes this different? A few things:

  1. The referral offer provides a benefit to the reader ($25) and to me as the blogger ($10).
  2. I’ve talked about online savings accounts in other posts on the site and it fits well with the overall theme.
  3. I am actually a user of the service I am promoting, have first-hand knowledge of the service, and lend some level of credibility to the offering by posting customer referral links rather than banner ads or other forms of affiliate advertising.

That third point I think is the most important, and will shape my money-making efforts on this blog going forward. I maintain a small section on the right hand side of the page with rotating ads, and in that space I will only promote products and services that I use and would honestly recommend to others. To further emphasize that I use and believe in the product or service, I will post customer referral links to these services when available. Hopefully by doing this I can provide information on products that are more relevant to my users.

At this point I have two services I am promoting. The first is the aforementioned ING Direct Orange Savings and Electric Orange Checking accounts. I have been an ING customer for years and believe that they provide a great product in the Orange Savings account, although I would like to see their interest rate a little higher. The other service I am promoting is Coupons.com, which I use quite often to print coupons to sweeten the grocery and drugstore deals I c0me across. As expensive as Sunday newspapers are becoming and the hassle of keeping up with the inserts, this is becoming my primary source for coupons. I’ll probably add more in the future as I find referral or affiliate programs for services and products I use.

Anyway, if you’ve ever wondered about the promotional links I put on here or were curious how you can support the site, hopefully this post helps answer your questions. I don’t ever expect to make enough here to quit my day job, but I would be very appreciative of your support through checking out these services nonetheless.

I will note that unless this strategy becomes very successful, I will likely keep the Google Adsense bars on the site for the time being. This doesn’t bring in a lot of money (I finally receached the $100 payout level about a month ago after about 18 months of using the service), but every little bit helps.

Look at what I won from “Don’t Mess With Taxes”!

April 7th, 2009

I don’t consider myself to be a particularly lucky person, at least when it comes to contests and drawings. Until yesterday, my biggest win ever had been a baseball cap that said “The Advocate’s Fantasy Football” in a random drawing when I was 14 (note: I am referring to the Baton Rouge daily newspaper, not the gay magazine, in case you were confused). So imagine my surprise when I got home yesterday afternoon and there was a package waiting for me.

I was initially confused. I haven’t ordered anything I remembered, and my name was on the package so it wasn’t my wife’s. I didn’t recognize the return address. Did the scammer founder of FreeNEzy.com finally track me down and send me a bomb for all of my posts criticizing his business practices? No, that’s even too conspiracy theory for me.

When I opened the box, I found a brand new Neat Receipts mobile scanner, compliments of the fine folks at the Neat Company and our friend Kay at Don’t Mess With Taxes (I love the name, too). Kay had run a drawing on her blog for the scanner and a copy of TurboTax Deluxe. You simply had to email her your mailing address and specify which of the prizes you wanted, and she would randomly draw from all submitted entries. Turns out I was the lucky winner. Yippee!

I had just been talking to one of my coworkers about these things. It is a small portable scanner designed for scanning receipts and business cards, but is wide enough to scan letter and legal size documents as well. I haven’t opened it up yet, but it seems like a great way to organize and save receipts before I lose them or the print fades. As I noted in a prior post, organizing receipts has been an issue for me.

You should certainly check out Kay’s blog if you haven’t already. Don’t Mess With Taxes provides tax-related news and tips in a surprisingly entertaining way. Kay is also the author of a new book, The Truth About Paying Fewer Taxes. Don’t Mess With Taxes is a regular stop in the blogosphere for me, and I can’t wait to see the tax commetary when Texas secedes from the union and is under the leadership of President Chuck Norris! <BIG GRIN>

Anyway, thanks again Kay!

More PF bloggers on Twitter

March 20th, 2009

I posted last week about going on Twitter. While I’m new to this whole Twitter thing, I really like being able to post quick summaries of my posts and post other tidbits that may not justify their own blog posting themselves. You can follow me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/CheapEncounters. My most recent “tweets” can also be found in the right sidebar.

I’m apparently not the only personal finance blogger on Twitter. The Budgeting Babe has compiled a listing of PF Blogger Twitter feeds here.

$100 Cash Promotion at Hustler $$$ Blog

July 11th, 2008

I often read other personal finance blogs to learn ways to better manage my finances and make some easy cash, and one of the coolest ones I have found is Hustler $$$ Blog. It never ceases to amaze me all the different ways this guy finds to make extra cash and find free crap.

If you haven’t read this blog, today is a really good day to start. That is because they are running a $100 cash giveaway promotion, and today is the last day to enter. You can get 1 entry for leaving a comment on this post offering free money, 5 entries for subscribing to their email feed, and 10 entries for posting a link to their blog on your own blog. Today is the last day to enter the giveaway, so make sure to take a couple of minutes to stop by today. C’mon, it’s Friday! You aren’t really going to work today, are you?

I got some neat stuff to promote my blog from VistaPrint

July 4th, 2008

If you have been on the web for more than a couple of months, you have likely seen advertisements for a company called VistaPrint (link: websites). For those of you who have never used their services, they are a provider of custom printing services, offering items such as business cards and rubber stamps. After seeing a great promotional offer on SlickDeals a little while back, I decided to give them a try to get a few things for myself and my blog.

Although I have heard a variety of things (positive and negative) about the company, overall I was very impressed with the items I received from them. Here is a rundown of the things I purchased:

  • Business Cards – I ordered a box of 250 business cards from them to promote my blog. The only other cards I had were my cards from my regular job, and I didn’t want to write my blog address on those in case someone would make the assumption that the blog reflected the views of my employer. I ordered the cards with a green background with the $100 bills and kept the text very simple with the URL, full blog name, my name, and then my blog email address. The quality was excellent and even though they were the free promotional cards the VistaPrint logo was tastefully printed on the back side only.
  • Rubber Stamp – I ordered an address stamp for personal use. I had one of these for one of my old addresses from another vendor and absolutely loved it and needed one for my current address. The stamp came just as I ordered and works great. These things really don’t cost much at all and are much more convenient that handwriting your address on an envelope or keeping up with address labels.
  • T-Shirt – My last, and favorite, item was a custom t-shirt to promote my blog. I used one of their standard templates and put “CheapEncounters.com” in big letters with the full name “Close Encounters of the Cheap Kind” in smaller letters directly underneath. It is a good quality shirt and the printing came out better than I expected. It is a great promotional item to wear during my CVS runs.

Again, I was overall very happy with my order and would definitely use them again. If you are one of those skittish types that isn’t comfortable giving your credit card number to a company you don’t know, just use a one-time use card number offered by Citi, Discover, or Bank of America. They definitely offer some cool stuff at very good prices.

Weekend Carnival Roundup

June 14th, 2008

This past week I did something I have never done before: I participated in a couple of carnivals. This is my first experience with carnivals, as I never really understood the concept before. After looking at the carnival submissions of some of my favorite more successful blogs, I figured it would be a good way to expand the audience of this humble little blog. Anyway, here are the carnivals I participated in this week.

Should we become survivalists to prepare for an upcoming energy crisis? on Carnival of Money Stories #63

The ultimate frugality: dumpster diving on Festival of Frugality #129

Check out these carnivals for many more great personal finance stories!

Bloggers helping bloggers make money! Thanks HowISaveMoney.net!

December 6th, 2007

As a father of twins, part time blogger and full time cheap bastard, I am always looking for ways to earn or save a little extra money. Lucky for me, I found this posting about PayPerPost over at HowISaveMoney.net. You can read the post at http://www.howisavemoney.net/make-money-online/money-online-payperpost-turning-reviewed-posts/.

LuLuGal lures her readers with an offer of making $7.50 for doing a review of her posting. I like commenting on other people’s blog postings anyway, so I figured why not. The post was a bit unclear on exactly how you went about getting your $7.50 beyond the initial step of clicking on the “Review My Post” button, but being adventurous I decided to keep going and see what was at the bottom of the rabbit hole, and I’m glad I did.

Here’s the way it works. First, you click on the “review my post” link. From there you can signup for PayPerPost and register your blog with their service. It will take a day or so for your blog to be approved for participation. Once your blog is approved, you can go back to their site to view current opportunities. You should see an opportunity for you from the post where you clicked the link, and from there you can choose to review the post. You submit your review (like I am now) by posting on your blog and entering the URL on PPP, and after it goes through the reviews you get your $7.50.

My only criticism of LuLuGal’s post would have been to explain how the process works like I did here, but I am still thankful to have found the post and to be alerted to this opportunity.

I thought it was such a good idea I went ahead and signed up and am offering the same opportunity to my readers. Do you have a blog? Do you have an opinion on my blog? Then click the link below and let us know what you think. The review can be positive or negative.

Note: This post is sponsored through PayPerPost. You can make money by writing posts to your blog as well. Click on the button below for more information.
